More than Just a Pass
Small Vessel engineers often have strong practical ability, but the oral also tests the procedural side of the job. SMS requirements, company procedures, permits and risk controls. TST are with you every step of the way. Your success is ours too!

Why TST Stands Out
Every Small Vessel engineer comes with different experience. Our 1-to-1 approach identifies the gaps, works through unfamiliar systems and develops the reasoning behind your answers. We don't believe in group learning, our focus is on you and your ability to articulate your answers.

Current Seagoing Expertise
Our consultants continue to work with the most modern marine engineering systems, combining MCA syllabus requirements with relevant, practical engineering experience including future fuels technology and handling subject to the IGF code.

SV EOOW MCA Oral Preparation FAQs
Who is the Small Vessel EOOW preparation for? Our preparation is designed for engineers working towards their MCA Small Vessel Engineering Officer of the Watch oral examination. Tuition is adapted around your previous vessel experience, current knowledge and areas requiring further development.
Is tuition available around my sea-going rota or college commitments? Yes. Our online delivery allows sessions to be arranged around sea-going rotations, college attendance, leave periods and other professional commitments, subject to consultant availability. This flexibility is particularly useful for candidates preparing while continuing to work at sea.
Does the oral only test practical engineering knowledge? No. Practical ability is important, but candidates must also demonstrate the procedural side of the job, including SMS requirements, company procedures, permits, risk assessments, communication and appropriate follow-up actions.
Do I receive access to TST's E-Learning resources? Candidates undertaking our structured preparation packages receive access to supporting engineering learning resources designed to complement their 1-to-1 tuition. These include technical learning modules, engineering illustrations, quizzes, flashcards, infographics and interactive oral examination questions covering key areas of the engineering syllabus.
I haven't studied properly for a while. Is that a problem? Not at all. Many candidates arrive with strong practical experience but haven't been in structured study for some time. We help identify where to begin, refresh the underlying knowledge and gradually develop confidence in answering questions aloud.
Will preparation use my own vessel experience? Yes. Your previous vessels and machinery provide an important starting point. We use that experience where appropriate while also developing your knowledge of systems and situations you may not previously have encountered.
Is Small Vessel EOOW covered by MIN 654? No. Small Vessel EOOW follows the MCA's separate Small Vessel Engineering oral examination syllabus. Our preparation is structured specifically around the relevant Small Vessel requirements.
What if I haven't worked with every system in the syllabus? That's completely normal. Small Vessel engineers often come from very different vessel types and machinery arrangements. We work through unfamiliar systems from the fundamentals, including how they operate, common faults, safety precautions and the engineer's responsibilities.
What will we cover during the preparation? Preparation covers the main Small Vessel EOOW syllabus areas alongside technical systems, fault finding, emergency situations, safe working practices, procedures and examiner-style oral questioning.
How is the 14-hour preparation pack delivered? The package consists of 14 hours of individual 1-to-1 tuition, delivered progressively around your knowledge and development needs. Sessions are supported by structured preparation materials, transcripts, E-Learning and continued support between sessions.
Do you teach model answers? We focus on understanding rather than memorising scripts. Examiners can change a scenario or ask follow-up questions, so candidates need to understand why an action is taken, not simply remember a prepared response.
Can I book just one session? Yes. A 2-hour individual session can be booked for targeted revision, unfamiliar systems, procedural knowledge, oral answer structure or a mock oral examination.
