MCA EOOW / Class 4 Oral Exam FAQs

Is MCA EOOW the same as Class 4 Engineer? Class 4 is an older term still commonly used within the maritime industry for engineer watchkeeping certification. The current UK MCA qualification is Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW), under STCW Regulation III/1.

Is the EOOW oral exam based on MIN 654? The MCA engineering oral examination syllabus is set out within MIN 654. TST structures its EOOW preparation and revision resources around the relevant syllabus areas for Engineer Officer of the Watch candidates.

Are these official MCA EOOW past papers? No. These are candidate-reported oral questions and recurring syllabus topics collected to support revision. Oral examinations can vary between examiners and candidates, so the questions should be used to practise knowledge and engineering judgement rather than memorise answers.

How should I use EOOW past oral questions? Answer the questions aloud as though you were speaking to the examiner. Explain your immediate actions, safety considerations, checks, communications, engineering reasoning and follow-up actions. If you cannot explain why you are taking an action, that subject probably needs further revision.

How can I prepare for my MCA EOOW oral exam? Combine past-question practice with structured revision of the MIN 654 syllabus, technical systems, statutory requirements and realistic oral questioning. TST also provides 1-to-1 EOOW oral preparation for candidates who want structured support before their examination.
