About TST Engineering Services
Maritime Training Built by Engineers, for Engineers.
TST Engineering Services is a UK maritime engineering training and consultancy provider specialising in structured MCA Engineering Oral Preparation. Our approach combines current seagoing engineering experience, methodical technical tuition and recognised instructor training to support engineers throughout their professional development.
Our preparation is built around understanding, not simply memorizing answers. Through structured 1-to-1 tuition, technical discussion and examiner-style questioning, candidates develop the knowledge, reasoning and confidence required to explain their decisions clearly during the MCA oral examination.
Supporting marine engineers from their first Certificate of Competency through to senior engineering management.
Our Delivery Method
Guided by international training standards.
Our training is developed and delivered by maritime professionals trained in IMO Model Courses 3.12, 6.09 and 6.10, supporting a structured, effective and professionally focused approach to learning, assessment and candidate development.

IMO Model Course 3.12 — Assessment, Examination and Certification of Seafarers IMO Model Course 3.12 focuses on the assessment, examination and certification of seafarers. It is designed for those involved in maritime education, training, assessment and certification processes. For TST, this supports the way we assess candidate readiness, identify knowledge gaps and provide structured feedback during oral preparation. The MCA oral examination is not only about knowing technical facts; it is about proving competence, judgement, safe decision-making and the ability to communicate at the correct professional level. TST applies this assessment-led approach by helping candidates understand where they currently are, what standard is expected, and what must be improved before examination.

IMO Model Course 6.09 — Training Course for Instructors IMO Model Course 6.09 is the recognised maritime instructor training model. It supports instructors involved in delivering training to seafarers and is linked to the expectations of STCW Regulation I/6, which requires those conducting seafarer training to be appropriately qualified. This course focuses on the planning, preparation and delivery of effective instruction. It includes the use of appropriate teaching methods, learning objectives, structured delivery and the ability to support different learner needs. For TST candidates, this matters because effective oral preparation is not just about asking questions. It requires clear explanation, structured teaching, correction of misunderstanding and the ability to break complex marine engineering topics into a logical learning pathway.

IMO Model Course 6.10 — Train the Simulator Trainer and Assessor IMO Model Course 6.10 focuses on the training and assessment of seafarers through simulator-based learning. It covers the relevance of simulation in maritime training, simulator pedagogy, learning psychology, exercise design, briefing, assessment and debriefing. Although TST’s MCA oral preparation is not simply simulator training, the principles are highly relevant. The MCA oral examination places candidates under pressure and requires them to respond to realistic operational scenarios, machinery failures, emergencies, legislation questions and decision-making challenges. TST uses this scenario-led approach to help candidates practise how they think, speak and respond when questioned under oral examination conditions.
