SV Chief Engineer MCA Oral Preparation FAQs

Who is the Small Vessel Chief Engineer preparation for? Our preparation is designed for engineers working towards a UK MCA Small Vessel Chief Engineer oral examination. Tuition is adapted around your vessel experience, current knowledge and the areas where you need the most support.

How is the Chief Engineer oral different from SV EOOW? At Chief Engineer level, the oral moves beyond routine operation and watchkeeping. You need to show stronger knowledge of management, SMS implementation, surveys, statutory requirements, maintenance, defects, risk and decision-making.

Do you cover dry-docking, surveys and vessel certification? Yes. Preparation can include dry-dock planning and management, statutory and class surveys, certificate requirements, defect management, repair priorities and the Chief Engineer’s role in maintaining vessel compliance throughout the process.

Are surveys and certification covered? Yes. Surveys, certification and vessel compliance form an important part of Chief Engineer preparation. We cover what is required, the Chief Engineer's responsibility and the action needed when deficiencies are identified.

Do you only ask mock oral examination questions? No. Mock oral questioning is an important part of preparation, but repeatedly answering questions alone does not necessarily develop the technical understanding required for an MCA oral examination. Our approach combines technical teaching, discussion, scenario-based questioning and progressive knowledge checks before moving towards examiner-style mock oral examinations.

Is Small Vessel Chief Engineer covered by MIN 654? No. Small Vessel Chief Engineer follows separate MCA Small Vessel Engineering oral examination syllabuses. TST structures preparation around the applicable Small Vessel Chief Engineer requirements.

What if I haven't worked with every system in the syllabus? That is common in the Small Vessel sector. Vessel types and machinery arrangements vary, so you may be questioned on systems you have not personally operated. We work through unfamiliar systems from the basics and build the safety, fault-finding and management knowledge around them.

Is E-Learning included with the full preparation plan? Yes. Full-plan candidates receive access to TST’s supporting E-Learning and revision resources, including technical modules, quizzes, flashcards and oral question banks to continue preparation between live sessions.

Can TST guarantee that I will pass? No training provider can guarantee an MCA examination result. TST focuses on structured preparation, realistic questioning, technical depth and constructive feedback so candidates are prepared to demonstrate their own competence, judgement and professional understanding under examination conditions.

Do you cover the Safety Management System? Yes. At Chief Engineer level, you need to understand how the SMS is applied within the engineering department, including procedures, permits, risk assessments, maintenance, reporting and corrective action.
